Kenya's Most Spectacular Safari

Nine days through Kenya's most iconic wildlife landscapes — from the rare species of Samburu to the legendary river crossings of the Maasai Mara.

Begin in Samburu National Reserve, a rugged semi-arid landscape that shelters Kenya's unique northern "Special Five" — Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich. Then journey south to the Maasai Mara — arguably the greatest wildlife reserve on Earth.

Three full days in the Mara give you the best possible chance of witnessing the famous river crossings, where hundreds of thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled waters. Beyond the migration, the Mara is home to the world's highest density of lions and offers extraordinary year-round game viewing.

Day by Day Itinerary

From Kenya's rugged north to the world-famous Mara — a journey through the best of East Africa.

1
Day 1

Arrive Nairobi — Welcome to Kenya

Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi. Your Wilderness Whispers representative transfers you to your hotel near Wilson Airport, where you will fly out in the morning. Enjoy a briefing dinner and an early evening to rest and prepare. Overnight: Nairobi hotel. Meals: Dinner.

2
Day 2

Fly to Samburu — The Wild North

After breakfast, transfer to Wilson Airport for a scenic 45-minute flight to Samburu National Reserve. Arrive in time for lunch at your camp, then join your first afternoon game drive. Samburu's rocky terrain, acacia woodland, and the Ewaso Ng'iro River create a dramatically different landscape to southern Kenya — home to species found nowhere else in the country. Overnight: Samburu luxury camp. Meals: Full board.

3
Day 3

Full Day Samburu — Kenya's Special Five

A full day dedicated to Samburu's remarkable wildlife. Track the elusive Grevy's zebra (the world's largest), watch reticulated giraffes browsing treetops, and keep an eye out for gerenuk standing upright to feed. The Ewaso River attracts hippo, crocodile, leopard, and large herds of elephant — excellent chances for all the Big Five. Optional guided nature walk around the riverbank at dawn. Overnight: Samburu luxury camp. Meals: Full board.

4
Day 4

Fly to the Maasai Mara

Early morning game drive in Samburu, then a scenic flight south to the Maasai Mara (approx. 1 hr). Arrive in time for a hot lunch at your exclusive Mara camp before heading out for your first afternoon game drive in one of Africa's most productive wildlife ecosystems. The sight of the open plains stretching to every horizon — often dotted with wildebeest and zebra — is extraordinary. Overnight: Maasai Mara camp. Meals: Full board.

5
Day 5

Maasai Mara — Big Cat Territory

Full day in the Mara, with the focus on big cat sightings. The Mara is famous for its lion prides — some numbering 30+ individuals — as well as healthy cheetah and leopard populations. Your guide will be radio-coordinating with rangers to track migration herd movements and river crossing alerts. Bush breakfast served in the field. Overnight: Maasai Mara camp. Meals: Full board.

6
Day 6

Mara River Crossings — Drama Unfolds

Spend the full day positioned along the Mara River during peak crossing season (July–October), waiting for the iconic crossing. The energy as thousands of wildebeest charge into the water — while Nile crocodiles and hippos wait below — is one of the most spine-tingling spectacles in nature. Optional early morning hot air balloon flight at dawn. Overnight: Maasai Mara camp. Meals: Full board.

7
Day 7

Third Day in the Mara — Full Exploration

A final full day in the Mara allows you to explore deeper into the reserve, visit the Mara Triangle, or simply enjoy the unhurried pace of sunrise game drives. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Maasai cultural visit at a local village — a chance to connect with the people who have co-existed with Africa's wildlife for centuries. Overnight: Maasai Mara camp. Meals: Full board.

8
Day 8

Morning Drive — Fly to Nairobi

Last morning game drive at sunrise in the Mara, then transfer to the airstrip for your flight back to Nairobi's Wilson Airport. Transfer to your hotel for a farewell lunch, then transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for evening departures or overnight at a Nairobi hotel for early morning flights. Overnight: Nairobi hotel (if required). Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.

9
Day 9

Depart Nairobi

Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward flight, carrying memories of one of Africa's most electrifying safari experiences. Meals: Breakfast.

Jul – Oct: Crossing Season

The wildebeest arrive in the Mara from Tanzania's Serengeti. Dramatic river crossings can occur daily between July and September — the most requested experience in Africa.

Jan – Feb: Dry & Warm

Excellent game viewing with dry conditions, warm weather, and far fewer visitors. Resident game is spectacular and the Mara is far less crowded than peak season.

Jun: Start of the Dry

The herds are beginning to arrive and conditions are ideal — fewer vehicles, cooler temperatures, and the entire Mara ecosystem coming alive after the short rains.

Frequently Asked Questions

No wildlife experience can be guaranteed — the migration follows rain patterns, not calendars. However, by allocating three full days in the Mara during peak season (July–October), your chances are very high. Our guides stay in constant radio contact and will position you at the right crossing point at the right time. Some guests have witnessed three crossings in a single day.
The Maasai Mara hot air balloon safari is one of the most iconic experiences in Africa. You drift silently over the plains at dawn, watching animals move below you in the golden morning light. It typically lasts about an hour, followed by a champagne bush breakfast. It is an optional add-on that we can arrange for you — highly recommended if it's within your budget.
Samburu is Kenya's hidden gem — a drier, more rugged landscape with fewer visitors and completely different species. The "Special Five" found only here (Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich) make it a must for wildlife enthusiasts. The contrast with the lush, green Mara is one of the highlights of this itinerary.
Kenya now operates an electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) system. Most nationalities must apply online before travel at the official Kenyan government portal. The process is straightforward and typically takes 3–5 business days. We will send you detailed instructions when your booking is confirmed.
Absolutely — this is one of the most popular combinations we offer. The East Africa Grand Safari (18 days) combines Tanzania's Northern Circuit and Zanzibar with the Kenya migration. We can also customise a bespoke multi-country journey to suit your dates and interests.
