Tanzania's Southern Circuit is the continent's largest protected ecosystem — vast, remote, and teeming with wildlife that has barely changed since the beginning of time.
At the heart of the Southern Circuit lies Nyerere National Park — formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve — the largest game reserve in Africa at an astonishing 30,000 km². This UNESCO World Heritage Site harbours extraordinary concentrations of wildlife including vast herds of elephants, wild dogs, hippos, crocodiles, and lions, all accessible by boat safari on the Rufiji River. The sheer scale of untouched wilderness here is unlike anywhere else on Earth.
Ruaha National Park, Tanzania's largest national park at 20,226 km², is home to the greatest lion population in Africa — more than 10% of the world's entire lion population roams these dramatic baobab-studded landscapes. Mikumi offers an accessible introduction to the south, while Udzungwa Mountains shelters ancient forests rich in endemic primates and over 400 bird species. And uniquely, Saadani National Park is where the African bush meets the Indian Ocean — the only park in East Africa where lions prowl on ocean beaches.
