The accessible gateway to the south — open floodplains, reliable Big Five, and an easy introduction to Tanzania's wild heart.
Mikumi National Park is Tanzania's most accessible southern park — a rewarding wildlife destination just 320 km from Dar es Salaam, with open floodplains that rival the Serengeti for game viewing ease.
Covering 3,230 km², Mikumi's defining feature is the vast Mkata floodplain — a broad, open expanse of grassland that makes wildlife spotting remarkably straightforward. Lions, elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and giraffes are reliably seen in the open, and the park's flat terrain gives visitors some of the best photographic sightings anywhere in Tanzania. The Big Five are all present, and the park's accessibility makes it ideal for first-time Africa travellers or those combining a city stay with a wildlife experience.
Mikumi shares an unfenced boundary with the much larger Nyerere National Park, meaning wildlife can move freely between the two — and Mikumi benefits greatly from this connection, particularly during the dry season when animals concentrate on the floodplains. The surrounding miombo woodland adds depth to the landscape and harbours its own array of bird and mammal life.
