Africa's greatest wilderness — 30,000 km² of untouched miombo, boat safaris on the Rufiji River, and wild dog packs.
Nyerere National Park — formerly the legendary Selous Game Reserve — is the largest protected wildlife area in Africa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of staggering scale and biodiversity.
At 30,000 km², Nyerere is larger than Switzerland and dwarfs most other African parks combined. Despite its extraordinary size, it receives very few visitors — making every game drive, walking safari, and boat safari on the Rufiji River feel like a private discovery. The park's vast miombo woodland is home to Tanzania's largest populations of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and lions, as well as one of Africa's most significant wild dog populations.
The Rufiji River — Tanzania's largest — cuts through the heart of the park, and boat safaris here offer a unique perspective on Africa's wildlife. Float past hippo pods, crocodile-lined banks, and elephants drinking at the water's edge. Walking safaris with armed rangers bring you nose-to-nose with tracks, termite mounds, and the raw pulse of the African bush. Nyerere is wilderness at its most profound.
