Ancient forests, endemic primates, and spectacular waterfalls — Tanzania's hidden paradise for hikers and nature lovers.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park is Tanzania's hidden jewel — an ancient Eastern Arc Mountain rainforest of global biodiversity significance, with endemic species found nowhere else on Earth.
The Udzungwa Mountains are part of the Eastern Arc — an archipelago of ancient mountain forests considered one of the world's top biodiversity hotspots, older than the Amazon rainforest. At 1,990 km², the park rises dramatically from the Rift Valley floor to over 2,500 metres, creating an extraordinary range of habitats. The forest is home to the endemic Iringa red colobus and Udzungwa red colobus monkeys, found nowhere else on the planet, as well as elephants, leopards, and African wild dogs.
The highlight for many visitors is the spectacular Sanje waterfall, which plunges 170 metres in three tiers through the forest — Tanzania's highest waterfall, reached by a rewarding hiking trail. With over 400 bird species including many Eastern Arc endemics, Udzungwa is a world-class birding destination. Uniquely, there are no vehicle drives — all exploration is on foot, making this a deeply immersive experience.
