Tanzania's Most Iconic Journey

Seven days through the heart of Tanzania's Northern Circuit — where the world's greatest wildlife spectacle unfolds across two of Africa's most celebrated ecosystems.

Begin in the legendary Tarangire, where ancient baobab trees stand sentinel over some of the largest elephant herds in Africa. Then journey north to the endless Serengeti — a vast sea of golden grass where lions, cheetahs, and leopards roam freely and two million wildebeest follow their ancient migration routes.

The journey culminates at the Ngorongoro Crater — the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and a natural enclosure for an astonishing density of wildlife including the endangered black rhino. This is a safari that delivers everything: the Big Five, iconic landscapes, and memories that last a lifetime.

Day by Day Itinerary

A carefully paced adventure — each day builds on the last, revealing a different face of Tanzania's wilderness.

1
Day 1

Arrive in Arusha — Gateway to the Wild

Your Wilderness Whispers representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfers you to your Arusha lodge. After settling in, enjoy a welcome dinner and orientation briefing with your guide, who will walk you through the days ahead. Overnight: Arusha lodge. Meals: Dinner.

2
Day 2

Tarangire National Park — Land of Giants

After an early breakfast, depart for Tarangire NP (roughly 2 hrs). The park is famous for its massive elephant herds — often numbering in the hundreds — and for the ancient baobab trees that dot the landscape like natural sculptures. Enjoy a full afternoon game drive before settling into your tented camp for a sundowner under the stars. Overnight: Tarangire tented camp. Meals: Full board.

3
Day 3

Into the Serengeti — The Endless Plains

Drive north through the scenic Ngorongoro highlands and descend onto the Serengeti's open savannah. En route, stop at the Olduvai Gorge — one of the world's most important paleoanthropological sites. Arrive at your central Serengeti camp in the afternoon for your first game drive on these legendary plains. Overnight: Central Serengeti camp. Meals: Full board.

4
Day 4

Full Day Serengeti — Following the Migration

A full day dedicated to exploring the Serengeti. Your guide tracks wildebeest herds, lion prides, and cheetah on the hunt. Enjoy a packed bush lunch in the field surrounded by wildlife. In the evening, witness one of Africa's most spectacular sunsets over the Serengeti plains, followed by an optional night drive to spot nocturnal predators. Overnight: Central Serengeti camp. Meals: Full board.

5
Day 5

Ngorongoro — The Crater Rim

Morning game drive in the Serengeti, then drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrive at your crater-rim lodge in the late afternoon — the views across the caldera are extraordinary, especially at sunset. Enjoy a crater-rim dinner as the mist rolls in below. Overnight: Ngorongoro crater-rim lodge. Meals: Full board.

6
Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater — The World's Greatest Arena

Descend 600 metres into the ancient crater for a full day of game viewing. The Ngorongoro Crater is home to approximately 25,000 large animals — including the rare black rhino, lions that never leave the crater floor, massive herds of buffalo, and tens of thousands of flamingos on the soda lake. This is your best chance for all of the Big Five in a single day. Overnight: Ngorongoro crater-rim lodge. Meals: Full board.

7
Day 7

Farewell — Return to Arusha

A final leisurely morning game drive in the conservation area, then drive back to Arusha for a farewell lunch. Your guide transfers you to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward flight. A journey complete — and memories that will stay with you forever. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch.

Low Season — heavy rains, some tracks impassable

Jun – Oct: Dry Season

Best overall game viewing. Vegetation is sparse, animals concentrate around water sources. Mara river crossings happen Jul–Sep. Cool mornings, warm afternoons.

Jan – Mar: Calving Season

500,000 wildebeest calves born in February alone — an extraordinary spectacle. Green and lush, with excellent predator action. Good value, fewer crowds.

Apr – May: Green Season

Long rains bring challenges but also rewards — dramatic skies, baby animals, birdlife at its peak, and significantly reduced rates at lodges.

Frequently Asked Questions

The migration is a year-round phenomenon, but the most dramatic river crossings occur between July and September when herds attempt to cross the Mara and Grumeti rivers. January–March is equally spectacular for the calving season, when approximately 500,000 calves are born in just a few weeks — attracting enormous numbers of predators.
Absolutely. This is actually our most popular itinerary for first-time visitors. The pace is relaxed, the parks are accessible, and the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater consistently deliver incredible wildlife encounters. Your expert guide will share everything you need to know, and our team is available throughout for any questions.
We use a selection of handpicked luxury tented camps and lodges — properties that balance authentic bush atmosphere with genuine comfort. All camps feature en-suite bathrooms, hot water, and electricity. The specific lodges are confirmed when we finalise your booking and depend on your dates and preferences.
Yes — every itinerary we offer is a starting point. We regularly add Zanzibar beach extensions, hot air balloon safaris over the Serengeti, cultural Maasai village visits, or combine this circuit with a Kenya Mara journey. Simply let us know what excites you and we'll build it in.
We recommend consulting your doctor or a travel health clinic at least 6–8 weeks before departure. Typically recommended: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and antimalarial medication. Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country. Your doctor will advise based on your specific health profile.
Most clients fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which is served by major hubs including Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Dubai, Amsterdam, and Doha. We provide airport pickup and drop-off as part of the package. We can also assist with flight recommendations through our preferred aviation partners.
