Tanzania's gateway gem — a spectacular mosaic of forest, crater lakes, and savannah at the foot of Mount Meru.
Arusha National Park may be the smallest park on the Northern Circuit, but it punches far above its weight — offering remarkable wildlife, dramatic scenery, and the shadow of Tanzania's second-highest mountain.
Located just 25 kilometres east of Arusha town, this compact 542 km² park is the perfect introduction to Tanzania's wildlife riches. Giraffes glide through montane forest, zebras graze on open savannah, and flamingos wade along the alkaline shores of the Momela Lakes — a series of shallow, brilliantly coloured crater lakes each tinted a different shade by varying algae and mineral content.
The park is also home to colobus and blue monkeys in the forest, hippos in the Ngurdoto Crater lake, and over 400 bird species. For adventurous travellers, the park offers the only walking and canoeing safaris in Tanzania's national parks, as well as climbs of Mount Meru — Africa's fifth-highest peak and a superb acclimatisation route for Kilimanjaro.
